About
What is ozone and how is it made?
Ever wondered about that fresh, sharp smell after a thunderstorm? That’s ozone at work! Ozone is a form of oxygen, but instead of just two oxygen atoms, it has three (O₃). This extra atom makes ozone a highly reactive and powerful molecule.

What Makes the Extra Oxygen Atom So Special?
The third oxygen atom in ozone gives it exceptional properties. Because of this, ozone is extremely reactive and acts as a potent oxidising agent. It readily interacts with bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants, breaking them down and neutralising them effectively. This makes ozone an invaluable disinfectant for purifying water, improving air quality, and cleaning surfaces.
In the natural environment, that extra atom also plays a crucial role in protecting life on Earth. It helps ozone absorb and block out the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, creating a protective layer in our atmosphere. So, that tiny extra atom isn’t just
powerful—it’s also essential for our planet’s health.
Ozone: Naturally Occurring and Man-Made
During thunderstorms, lightning provides enough energy to transform oxygen molecules in the air into ozone, a reason why we often notice that fresh, clean smell after a storm. It’s nature’s way of cleaning the atmosphere.
Humans, however, have developed technology to produce ozone artificially. Using devices called ozone generators, engineers apply electrical energy to oxygen molecules, splitting and recombining them to form ozone. These generators are now
widely used to disinfect water, purify air, and clean surfaces, thanks to ozone’s impressive germ-killing abilities.
How Do Generate Ozone?
The process involves specialised machines called ozone generators. These devices generate ozone by applying high-voltage electrical discharges—similar to lightning—to oxygen molecules in the air.
This causes the molecules to split and then recombine as
ozone. The generated ozone can then be directed into water, air or onto surfaces, delivering rapid disinfection and cleaning power where needed.
Modern ozone generators are safer, more efficient, and more accessible thanks to improvements in electrical engineering and materials, making ozone a practical tool in many settings.
